How Port Days in Scandinavia Differ
Three things set this region apart. First, the summer days are long; in June the light lasts late into the evening in the south and barely fades in the north, so ships often stay into the evening. Second, many ports are compact and easy to explore on foot, which makes independent touring more practical than in many Mediterranean ports where the city lies inland. Third, the scenery between ports is part of the trip, especially the approach to Stockholm through its archipelago and the sail into a Norwegian fjord.

Starting or Ending Your Cruise in Scandinavia
Copenhagen is one of the busiest turnaround ports in Northern Europe, and many Baltic and Norway sailings begin or end there. Stockholm is another common start for Baltic routes. Arriving a day early is wise for any fly-in cruise; Copenhagen in particular is easy to enjoy for a night or two, and the airport is linked to the center by metro. Which are the main Scandinavia cruise ports?
Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and Bergen are the big four city ports. On Norway itineraries you will also see Geiranger, Flåm, Ålesund and Stavanger. Copenhagen and Stockholm are also common places to start and end a cruise.
Do ships always dock close to the city?
Not always. Each city has several cruise quays, and the berth is assigned per call. Some are in the old harbor and walkable; others are a shuttle, bus or taxi ride away. Your daily planner on board names the quay.
Do I need local currency in port?
Denmark, Sweden and Norway each have their own krone or krona and none uses the euro. Cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere, so many cruisers never carry cash.
Is a ship excursion or going on my own better?
In the four capitals it is easy to explore independently. For fjord sights such as the Flåm Railway or a viewpoint above Geiranger, a ship tour or a pre-booked local tour takes the timing worry away.
