The Bergen cruise port is a gateway to the fjords and one of the most charming cities on any Norway itinerary. Bergen Havn, the port authority, lists five cruise docks: Festningskaien, Bontelabo and the north and south Skolten quays at the entrance to Vågen harbor, and Jekteviken on Puddefjorden.
| Dock | Location | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Skolten (north and south) | Entrance to Vågen harbor | A waterfront walk to Bryggen and the fish market |
| Bontelabo | Entrance to Vågen harbor | Similar to Skolten; close to the old town |
| Festningskaien | Entrance to Vågen, by Bergenhus Fortress | Close to the fortress and Bryggen |
| Jekteviken | Puddefjorden, south-west of the center | Farther from Bryggen; look for transfer information |
Bergen is also a home port for many Norwegian coastal voyages, which use their own terminal; the docks above are for ocean cruise ships.
A Bergen Port Day
Bryggen, the row of gabled wooden warehouses on the harbor, is a UNESCO World Heritage site from the days of the Hanseatic League. Wander the narrow passages behind the facades, then continue to the fish market at the head of the harbor. The Fløibanen funicular climbs Mount Fløyen for the classic view of the city, harbor and your ship below.
With more time, take a fjord sightseeing boat from the harbor, or visit Troldhaugen, the former home of composer Edvard Grieg, south of the center. Visit Bergen is the official tourist board, and Bergen shore excursions lists guided options.

Tips for Bergen
- Go up Mount Fløyen early. The funicular lines grow when several ships are in port.
- Wear shoes with grip. Bryggen’s old boardwalks and lanes can be slippery in the rain.
- Bergen is a popular start and end point for Norwegian coastal voyages and fjord cruises. A night in town before or after is time well spent.
Bergen Cruise Port Questions
Which Bergen cruise port quay is closest to Bryggen?
The quays at the entrance to Vågen harbor, Skolten, Bontelabo and Festningskaien, are the closest; Bryggen lines the same harbor. Jekteviken, on Puddefjorden, is on the other side of the city center.
Does it really rain that much in Bergen?
Bergen has a reputation as one of Europe’s wettest cities. Pack a light waterproof jacket for any Bergen call, whatever the forecast says the day before.
Starting or Ending a Cruise in Bergen
Some Norway sailings begin or end in Bergen rather than in Copenhagen, Amsterdam or Southampton. If yours does, Bergen Airport Flesland is south of the city and connected to the center by light rail and airport buses, so a night in town before the cruise is easy to arrange. Stay near the harbor and you can watch the ships come in over breakfast.
On a turnaround day, leave bags at your hotel and spend the morning on Mount Fløyen or in the Bryggen museums, then head to the quay in the afternoon. Search hotels on Rooms Cheap or ask our advisors to package a pre-cruise night.
