Where Ships Dock in Stockholm

The Stockholm cruise port is really several quays run by Ports of Stockholm, which names Stadsgården, Skeppsbron and Frihamnen as the ones international cruise lines favor. Which one you get makes a real difference to your day, so check before you plan.

QuayWhere it isGetting to the Old Town
SkeppsbronNext to the Royal Palace in Gamla StanOn foot; most sights are within walking distance
StadsgårdenOn the Södermalm shore; the Stockholm Cruise Center at 165/167 shares a building with the Fotografiska museumAbout 20 minutes on foot from 165/167, or a short bus or taxi ride
FrihamnenNorth-east of the center; a second Stockholm Cruise Center at Frihamnen 638About 10 minutes by taxi or 20 by bus
NynäshamnA separate port well south of the cityTrain or coach; plan for a long day

Distances above are as published by Visit Stockholm, the city’s official visitor site. Skeppsbron only takes smaller ships, so most large cruise ships use Stadsgården or Frihamnen.

A Stockholm Port Day

Start in Gamla Stan, the Old Town, with its narrow lanes, the Royal Palace and the colorful houses on Stortorget square. Then take a ferry or walk across to Djurgården, where the Vasa Museum displays a complete 17th-century warship raised from the harbor, alongside ABBA The Museum and the open-air Skansen. Each could fill hours, so choose one or two.

For a longer call, Drottningholm Palace, the royal family’s home on an island west of the city, is reachable by boat in summer. Stockholm shore excursions lists guided options if you prefer to have the logistics handled.

Getting Around on Your Own

  • Public transport in Stockholm accepts contactless bank cards, so you do not need to buy anything in advance for a single day.
  • Commuter ferries link Slussen and Djurgården and double as a cheap harbor cruise.
  • Allow extra time if you are returning to Frihamnen or Nynäshamn. The all-aboard time does not move for traffic.
  • Many museums close earlier than you might expect. Check hours before building a plan around them.

Stockholm Cruise Port Questions

How far is the Stockholm cruise port from the Old Town?

It depends on the quay. Skeppsbron is next to the Royal Palace in Gamla Stan. Visit Stockholm puts the Stadsgården 165/167 terminal about a 20-minute walk from the Old Town, and Frihamnen about 3 km from the city, roughly 10 minutes by taxi or 20 by bus.

What is Nynäshamn?

A separate harbor south of Stockholm, also run by Ports of Stockholm, that some large ships use instead of the city quays. From there you reach Stockholm by train or coach, so allow much more time.

Is the sail through the archipelago worth getting up for?

Yes. Ships thread between thousands of islands on the way in and out, and it is one of the scenic highlights of any Baltic cruise. Check the arrival time and set an alarm.
